The Gezi Movement emerged from the 2013 protests in Turkey. The proteses started on 28 May initially to contest the urban development plan for Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park. The protests were sparked by outrage following a brutal evictioin of a sit-in at the park. Sunsequently supporting protests and strikes took place across Turkey protesting a wide range of concerns. The protests attracted relatively little mainstream media coverage in Turkey and social media played a key role.

Next stop: Paris in March 2014.
